Photographer Gerhard Westrich would be able provide an answer to this question. The Berliner took the participants’ pictures at the premiere of the Berlin Wall Race in 2011 – before the start and afterwards at the finish line. This was meant to become a photo report for a German magazine. But presumably the editors were a little bit “disappointed”, since at the end of the race many athletes were looking even better than before. No faces twisted in pain, no gaunt bodies. So the original story was gone, but the portraits by Gerhard Westrich are still fascinating and gorgeous to look at:
