Course:

The Berlin Wall Trail is mainly a flat and paved path. It contains trail and sand passages as well as uneven surfaces with stones, roots, and broken concrete.

In 2017 the Berlin Wall Race course will be run counterclockwise; the direction changes every year. The course is sufficiently marked with sprayed arrows. A road book with the precise course description as well as the GPS track can be downloaded from the website www.100meilen.de/en (approximately one month prior to the race).

Some parts of the course lead along busy public roads. Participants have to comply with the German Road Traffic Act. In the case of a verified violation, a penalty will be inflicted at the race director’s discretion. The penalty framework includes time penalties up to disqualification.

The use of Nordic Walking poles or similar tools is allowed starting at VP 3 (Oranienburger Chaussee). Wearing headphones within the urban area is prohibited due to safety reasons.

Aid stations:

Aid stations are located every 5 to 8 kilometers. In total, there will be 27 aid stations. A variety of food and drinks suitable for runners will be provided. The race organizers strive to keep the supply diverse.

Due to reasons of environmental protection, no cups are allowed to be taken onto the course. All trash from the aid stations must also be disposed of there.

Control points:

Every aid station (VP) is also a timekeeping station. The cutoff times apply for the three defined changeover points in Hennigsdorf, Sacrow, and Teltow (see below).

Relay changeover:

The changeover of the relay runners (2-person and 4-person teams) is only allowed at the changeover points.

2 person-relays: The changeover is at Sacrow after 71 kilometers.

4 person-relays : Runner 1 from Start to Hennigsdorf (34 km), runner 2 from Hennigsdorf to Sacrow (37 km), runner 3 from Sacrow to Teltow (32 km) and the final runner from Teltow to the finish (59 km).

10plus-relays: The changeover points can be freely chosen by participants; changeover is possible at each of the 27 aid stations.

Split times:

At every aid station the split times are recorded electronically and – if the data connection is stable – immediately posted on-line.

Crew/Pacers:

Support by a bicycle crew member or pacer is only possible for solo runners. Other runners or road users must not be disturbed or endangered by the crew. Support must be registered.

Bicycle or pacer support is only possible after VP3 (Oranienburger Chaussee). The bicycle crew member can immediately set off to VP 3 as a group, together with the organizer’s team of bicyclists, right after the start of the solo runners.

Pacers must run next to or behind the participant.  Drafting is prohibited.  Solo runners may only have one pacer or bicycle crew member on the course.

Mandatory equipment:

It is recommended for participants to carry along at least 0.5 liters of liquid (water or other beverage) from each aid station. In case of higher outdoor temperatures, the race director may make it mandatory for participants to carry along at least 0.5 liters of liquid.

During the entire race, participants or their crew have to carry along a functional and switched-on cell phone. The phone number needs to be filled in at registration. Any changes must be made at race packet pickup (11 August 2017) at latest.  The race director will make test calls from a number which will be given out immediately before the race, and if there is no answer or prompt return call, will decide on a penalty.

From 21:00 to 6:00 and whenever it is dark, participants and crew must carry a (head)lamp and wear a reflective safety vest (yellow or orange) or reflective shoulder strap. Carrying along a spare lamp is recommended.

The organizer reserves the right to check the equipment during the race and to disqualify participants who don’t comply, or prohibit them from continuing until they have the mandatory equipment.

Participant limit:

The number of solo runners is limited to 350.

The ambassadors of the Berlin Wall Race have an additional special quota of 20 starting places and the race director has an additional special quota of 25 starting places, which may be used at their discretion after the participant limit is reached but before the registration deadline.

For the relays, 15 (2-person), 25 (10-plus), and 40 (4-person) starting places are available.

Terms of payment:

The registration fee has to be paid no later than 14 days after registration. The application will be automatically cancelled if it is not paid within this period.  The payment will be carried out through SEPA money transfer. The bank details are given with the registration confirmation.  If no SEPA transfer is possible, the payment can be made by Paypal or by credit card through Paypal (without a personal Paypal account). After the receipt of the participation fee, the participant will enter the starting list. In case of a later fee-based modification, the participant will temporarily be removed from the starting list due to technical reasons until receipt of the supplementary payment.

Replacements from the waiting list have to pay immediately within 7 days after the specific notification. After this period of time the participant forfeits his or her starting place. Supplementary payments for additional bookings and fee-based modifications are also due within 7 days, otherwise modifications do not take effect.

The organizer reserves the right to refuse individual participants without giving a reason. If the registration fee has already been paid, it will be refunded immediately.

Medical certificate:

A medical certificate, obtained or renewed in the twelve months prior to the day of the event, is mandatory for participants (solo runners) and has to be handed in when picking up the race pack. The certificate must prove in written form that the participant is able to manage a distance of 100 miles from a medical point of view. It must carry the signature and seal (clearly recognizable) of a licensed physician.  A doctor may not issue a certificate for himself or herself.  We suggest using the DUV form, which can be downloaded here. Without a medical certificate, the participant is not permitted to start the race.

Medical service:

Medical service is provided by the organizer.

Rule Violations:

Verified rule violations will be punished at the race director’s discretion with time penalties or disqualification. Rule violations are for example unsportsmanlike behavior, taking a short cut, using vehicles, modifying the bib, or violations to the Road Traffic Act. Severe violations like crossing at red lights or closed railways will lead to disqualification.

Disqualification can result from noncompliance with the mandatory equipment (see Mandatory Equipment) or physical overexertion as assessed by the race physician.

Timekeeping:

The timekeeping including split times is carried out by special chips from the company Sportident GmbH. There is no need to bring a chip.

Cutoff times:

WP 3 Teltow Stadium, ca. 103 km, 18:30 time limit for solo runners, 17:00 time limit for relays

Participants (solo runners/relay teams) who leave the checkpoints after the given time limits have to drop out of the race and will not receive an official time.

If it is obvious that runners will clearly exceed the finish time limit after leaving the last changeover point, the leader of the last aid station can declare the race as ended for those participants. The runners may continue the course under their own responsibility without an official final time. The results list will display DNF.
